What is an Infinity Pool?

Infinity pools are known by many names: overflow pool, vanishing edge pool, zero edge pool, spillover pool, and infinity edge pool are just a few of the options you could go with.

These pools, whatever you choose to call them, are swimming pools where the water flows over more or one edge. The goal is to produce an illusion of water without boundaries. The edge appears to stretch on forever.

They are creative, unique, and they are beautiful.

How Does An Infinity Pool Work?

The infinity pool design is an intriguing one, to say the least. Unlike traditional pools where the water is all contained within the pool walls, one or more edges on these pools meet the water level exactly. The water flows over the edges and creates a waterfall, which not only creates a gorgeous landscape, but is incredibly relaxing.

You might wonder what happens to the excess water. It would be inefficient and wasteful to just let the water leave. What happens instead is that the water falls into a drain, catch basin, or balance tank that is below the edge pool edge. The device there recycles the water and pumps it back into the pool.

What is the Difference Between an Infinity Edge Pool and a Regular Pool?

There are the standard visual differences, of course, but the structures of vanishing edge pools and traditional pools are also different. Infinity pools are always almost always built with concrete, while traditional pools are commonly made from a variety of materials. This is because infinity pools have to endure a lot and concrete does an excellent job.

Infinity pools are also typically of a greater depth than the average swimming pool. This is necessary because of the overflow system. It is important to ensure the swimmers aren't constantly splashed by overflowing water while they're trying to enjoy themselves.

You will often hear the question, "Are infinity pools safe?" You will be relieved to know that in that respect, there is no difference between the beautiful infinity pool and the comfortable, traditional option.

How Much Do Infinity Pools Cost?

There is, of course, some variation in costs depending on several things, but, on average, an infinity pool will cost around $80,000.

Factors such as size, material, landscape, and style will determine whether your pool falls on the ends or between $55,000 and $130,000. While a few may cough up the cash to pay out of pocket, most people choose to finance their build.  Let's take a closer look at why the price tag is what it is.

Size

As with any pool, the size will affect the price, but infinity pools are a little more impacted because they're specialized. Larger infinity pools require more labor, materials, and excavation work. Additionally, stronger support structures and comprehensive filtration and circulation systems are also required and become more complex as the size increases.

Material

As stated above, infinity pools are most commonly constructed using concrete, but there are other options. Regardless of your choice, premium materials such as high-quality tiles, fiberglass, or concrete will be necessary.

Fiberglass is usually the most affordable, but you do sacrifice some durability by choosing that route. It's all a matter of prioritizing.

Landscape

Land preparation will play a huge factor in your price. Land preparation includes clearing the site, excavating, grading, and/or leveling. Excavation costs can be anywhere from $1.50 to $2.00 per square foot and $8.00 to $25.00 per cubic yard. A lot of it depends on the company you go with.

Style

Certain intricacies cause prices to fluctuate, including lights, decor, and so on. All the special features you include will have as much to do with the price tag as whether or not you choose to go with a single, double, or triple vanishing edge. The more complex the build, the more expensive it will be.

Can You Build Your Own Infinity Pool?

You definitely can! Today's pool market would have you believe that a build like this is out of your reach, but that's just not true. With the proper help, resources, and understanding of the process, you can easily and quickly build your own infinity pool.

How Do You Find a Reputable Pool Company?

Research is the name of this game. To find a reputable company, you must review customer references and comments to see how the company is treating their employees, you need to collect at least three or four estimates from the area so that you can compare them, and it is crucial that you meet with potential designers in person to ensure that they're professional, certified, and willing to work with you.
