Build Your Own Pool

Aug 02, 2023

You’ve been kicking around the idea of building your own pool. Here at DIY Pools and Spas we’re going to argue that a pool project can be the perfect thing to tackle this summer. You invest a few weeks in getting your pool built and then it brings joy to your family for decades.

The benefits of a well-built inground pool far outweigh the cost, especially with our program. Let's consider why DIY pool construction may be the perfect summer getaway.

Did you know that home value is automatically bumped up when the yard has a pool? HGTC estimates a simple inground pool design can increase home value by 5-8%.  That's right. While you're following your backyard dreams, you're also bringing the value of your home up.

Also, and much more importantly, there is nothing that brings a family together like a pool. We've seen firsthand how having a pool in the backyard strengthens family bonds and creates years worth of fond memories. This is why we're so passionate about helping our customers get their dream pool for a fraction of the expected cost.

Can You Build Your Own Pool?

Yes! You most certainly can.

We know that facing this challenge can be daunting, but that's why we're here to help. You don't have to stress about all the building and zoning regulations because we take care of all the planning details to make sure your project will be approved for permits. Did you know that it’s your right as a homeowner to pull permits on your own property? You do not need a liscense to submit your pool plans as an owner-builder. Next you simply hire your own subcontractors, and guess what? - We event help you do that! Our passion is to give you all the resources you need to make this process easy.

We do not encourage above-group pools, or pool kits simply because they don't last as long, and they don't offer the same sense of luxury as an inground pool. Instead, we recommend inground, gunite pools. We know that the right atmosphere can be conducive to a happier, healthier family. We've seen it happen time and time again. When you can step away from the stresses of daily life and be present, your relationships thrive. In the end, you will have a luxurious pool that will last your family a lifetime when properly cared for.

Can You Build Your Own Inground Pool?

Once again, absolutely yes. You simply need the right framework and resources in order to achieve this goal.

Building your own inground pool doesn't mean you'll be taking your shovel to 1.5 tons of dirt, but it does mean hiring the right professionals to do the dig. It's this first step of the pool construction process that stops a lot of people from building their dream pool. Just Googling isn't enough to connect you with affordable, experienced, quality contractors. That's where we come in. As a part of our program, we provide a list of subcontractors who are experienced and trustworthy.

Our services are designed to assist and teach you in every way. From helping you learn the framework to giving you the resources, we're here for you. We help you select materials and locate them. We also recommend top-notch equipment and help you order it wholesale.

Now, a word of caution. A lot of other sites argue that pool kits are the “pools of the future” meant to save you thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, this isn't the case. DIY kits cost run very similar to a standard pool installation and just don't last as long as they should because they aren't concrete pools. By working with our program, you can save $20,000 and have a concrete pool tailor-made to the needs and desires of you and your family.

How to Be Your Own Pool Contractor

There are many disadvantages to hiring a pool contractor. For starters, hiring a pool contractor is time-consuming, tedious, and stressful. They're expensive, and, more often than not, they're backed up on their timeline so that you could end up waiting weeks or months before your project is even considered.

On top of this, contractors often roll up costs so that you don't have a good picture of the total and you can't see what subcontractor services actually cost. They do this because they can add in more profit margin, which is money you didn't know you could save by being your own contractor.

Our pool company not only offers a directory of trusted and affordable subcontractors, but we also train you to lead your own pool project with ease. Taking this route equals less stress and more money saved.

Why Should You Build Your Own Pool?

There are many reasons why people are building their own pools, including the following:

1. Big Savings

A higher pool cost is one of the biggest reasons people shy away from building their own pools when, in fact, the opposite is true. By working with us to create your dream pool, you can save tens of thousands of dollars. In fact, we are so confident in our program that we offer a "save or don't pay" guarantee. This means that if you don't save a minimum of $10k we will give you a full refund on the price of our program. You might wonder how we're able to offer this. Well, since most of our clients save over $20k working with us, we never have to give this refund out.

2. It's an Investment in Family

Swimming pools are the perfect way to entice your family to spend time together every day. When you have a backyard that's full of beauty and entertainment, it encourages deeper relationships that aren't full of technological walls. The yard with the pool tends to be the yard that all of the kids hang out in.

3. Improved Quality of Life

Quality of life isn't just about your physical health, though pools improve that greatly. We believe that a pool will bring your family together in a way that creates lasting memories and healthy relationships. There is no greater improvement to your quality of life than being surrounded by those you love.

4. Vacation all Summer

When your backyard is your dream come true, you feel no need to spend thousands of dollars on a vacation that only lasts a week. Every time you step outside with your family, you're entering your own, private world of peace. It's conducive to a lifestyle that's healthier and happier.

What Are the Steps to Building Your Own Pool with the DIY Pools and Spas

DIY Pools and Spas can help you build the pool of your dreams. Our five-step program brings your pool from conception to reality. Let's explain.

1. Design

Once you join our program, you start your pool build by having you fill out a quick design intake form that will give us information on your property and vision. Front there we design your dream pool that aligns with your vision and budget. We work within the current costs and your vision to create a 3D model of what your pool will look like. If you have any changes to this pool project, we'll adjust the model as needed. If you are unsatisfied with our designs, it does not cost you a single penny. Our “love it or leave it” guarantee allows you to exit our program if you are unhappy with your design or the associated cost to build it.

2. Plans

Next, we'll create a building plan for your pool. We know local laws vary, so we will work to give you all the right plans so that you can obtain permits. We allso have a “permit ready guarantee” that states If any adjustments are required, we'll adjust them for you without charging. This includes any adjustments needed for HOA approval.

3. Financing

This step is intimidating to some, but that's why we recommend the best home improvement lenders that work with homeowner builders.

Home equity lines of credit are a very popular choice, as well as home improvement lenders that release the funds directly to the homeowner for your convenience. With the amount of money your saving you also may have the opportunity to pay in cash. Financing is one of the most intimidating parts of the process and is why many homeowners pay $20,000 more than they should for their pool. With our system, we suggest lending solutions that you can use to help get over this hurdle.

4. Engineering

We work with locally licensed engineers to get structural plans for your project. These plans include the necessary details for building the foundation of the pool, including gunite, steel, the grading of the slopes, and excavation.

Engineering is required for a couple of reasons. It's necessary to receive permits for your inground gunite/concrete pools (fiberglass pools are exempt) and the plans guarantee the structural foundation of the pool with never crack, leak, or have any movement-related issues, allowing you to enjoy the pool for longer. We currently provide engineering in these states: CA, AZ, UT, CO, NM, OR, WA, NV, TX, MA, FL, AL, GA, TN, NC, SC, ID, LA, VA. If you are not in one of these states you will be required to source your own engineering.

5. Permits and Subcontractors

Now that you have your plans and engineering you can submit for permits as an owner builder. Again, you do not need a pool contractor licensing to do this. Once you have your permits you will need to hire and schedule the pool subcontractors. Finding pool subcontractors can be a daunting task, that is why we take care of it for you! We'll recommend the best subcontractors in the area based on availability, pricing, and work quality. We even review the bids from these subcontractors to make sure their giving you a fair quote.

6. Construction

Finally, we will guide you through the construction process making it much less complicated than you might think. Our program walks your step by step through the process with video guides, checklists and personal consulting. We also have an awesome private group of DIY pool builders. This means you can chat with 100’s of other DIY pool builders inside our program. Everyone in our group is sharing tips, resources, and encouraging each other through the process. So while this may be called Do It Yourself pool construction, you’re not doing it alone!
